After operating her private practice for 23 years, in December 2022, Liza Shaw relocated from the Western Part of North Carolina, to the Wilmington area . She offers both telehealth and in-person appointments in her Carolina Beach office, providing couples, family and individual therapy. 

Whether working with more than one client at a time, or individuals, Liza's approach is based on Family Systems Theory, a theory of human behavior that defines the family unit as a complex social system, in which members interact to influence each other's behavior. Family members interconnect, allowing to view the system as a whole rather than as individual elements. This method has been shown to be much more effective, providing longer lasting change than other counseling techniques. Family Systems Theory also helps the therapist have an unbiased perspective about all members of a family system. -- especially useful when working with couples who have highly polarized points of view. 

All clients are required to participate in an initial session via telehealth and then it will be determined at the end of the initial session, whether or not in-person services would be the best approach. At that time, Ms. Shaw will inform clients of the location of the office and will schedule the next appointment. 

New clients generally can schedule an appointment within 1 to 2 weeks, however in busier times of year it can take 3 to 4 weeks.
